Cook County Sheriff and Jail Mugshots

The Cook County Sheriff's Office runs the jail and keeps all booking records for the county. When someone gets arrested in Cook County, the sheriff's staff takes a mugshot and logs the person into the system. This data includes the name, date of birth, charges, bond amount, and the booking photo itself. The office sits at 50 W. Washington Street in Chicago. You can call (312) 603-6444 for general questions or reach the sheriff's line at (773) 674-6835 for jail-related matters.

Cook County Jail holds more people than most state prisons. On any given day, thousands of inmates are in custody. Each one has a booking record with a jail mugshot on file. Staff update these records as charges change or new court dates come up. The jail uses an electronic system that ties each mugshot to a unique booking number, so finding the right record is fairly straightforward if you have a name or case number to work with.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office website also gives access to other tools. You can look up sex offenders, check for outstanding warrants, and view crime mapping data for areas in Cook County.

Illinois Law on Cook County Mugshots

Illinois has clear rules about jail mugshots and who can see them. Under 5 ILCS 140/2.15, law enforcement must release arrest information within 72 hours of a booking. That information includes the person's name, age, address, and photograph when one is on file. It also includes the charges and the time and place of the arrest. This applies to Cook County the same as it does everywhere else in Illinois.

There are limits, though. The same law says agencies cannot post booking photos on social media for minor offenses. Class C misdemeanors, Class B misdemeanors, petty offenses, and civil offenses are all off limits for social media posting unless the person is a fugitive or missing. Cook County follows this rule strictly. The jail mugshot still exists in the booking record, but the sheriff's office will not publish it on Facebook or similar sites for low-level cases.

The Uniform Conviction Information Act (20 ILCS 2635) is another key law. It requires the Illinois State Police to make conviction data available to the public. This covers Cook County arrests that led to convictions and are now part of the state criminal history database. You can request this info through the Bureau of Identification using a Conviction Information Request form.

Cook County Jail Mugshots Database

The Inmate Information Center is the main database for Cook County jail records. It runs at iic.ccsheriff.org and is separate from the county government site. This portal was set up to give the public a direct way to search for inmates. You type in a last name, first name, or booking number, and the system pulls up matching records. Each result shows the booking date, charges, bond, and court information tied to that Cook County arrest.

The Inmate Information Center page is shown below.

This database is updated as new bookings happen at Cook County Jail throughout the day and night.

One thing to keep in mind is that Illinois also has an anti-mugshot law under 815 ILCS 505/2QQQ. This makes it illegal for websites to charge fees to take down someone's mugshot. If a site publishes your Cook County booking photo and then asks for money to remove it, that is a violation of the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act. The Illinois Attorney General enforces this law. Websites must fix errors within five days of getting a notice, and people can sue for $100 per day that wrong information stays posted.

How to Get Cook County Booking Records

There are a few ways to get jail mugshots and booking records from Cook County. The method you use depends on what you need and how fast you need it.

  • Search the online inmate locator at cookcountyil.gov for current detainees
  • Use the Inmate Information Center at iic.ccsheriff.org for detailed booking data
  • File a FOIA request with the Cook County Sheriff's Office for older records
  • Call (312) 603-6444 to ask about a specific booking by name or case number
  • Visit 50 W. Washington Street in Chicago in person during business hours

For records that are no longer in the online system, a Freedom of Information Act request is the way to go. The Illinois FOIA law at 5 ILCS 140 gives everyone the right to ask for public records from government agencies. Cook County must respond within five business days. The request should include the person's full name, approximate date of arrest, and any other details you have. Fees for copies are limited to the actual cost of making them under the State Records Act (5 ILCS 160). Labor costs cannot be charged for pulling the records.

Note: FOIA requests sent to the wrong office will be forwarded, but this adds time to the process.

State Records for Cook County Arrests

This tool covers people who were sentenced in Cook County and then sent to a state prison. The IDOC search shows current inmates, their facility, projected release dates, and offense details. It does not show jail mugshots from the county booking, but it does have state prison photos.

The Illinois State Police Bureau of Identification also holds criminal history data for Cook County arrests. Their office is at 260 N. Chicago Street in Joliet. You can submit a Conviction Information Request form to get conviction records. The bureau keeps over five million fingerprint records in its system. For questions about the process, email ISP.BOI.Customer.Support@illinois.gov or call 815-740-5160. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
